Cyber Essentials Explained

Getting Your IT Certified

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed scheme that helps to protect you and your business against the most common cyber threats and prove your commitment to cyber security.

Cyber Essentials explained

There are 3 levels of engagement with Cyber Essentials, all aimed to make certification affordable for small and medium sized businesses.

  1. Understanding the terminology and what is required is the most basic step to take. There is no certification for this however, gaining enough knowledge to begin securing your IT and in turn your business should not be underestimated.
  2. Cyber Essentials is the entry level of certification to achieve and will require an internal audit and completion of a stealth test. The certification is informative, educational and gives you piece of mind that your business will be protected against the vast majority of common cyber threats. If awarded certification, you will be able to display the Cyber Essentials logo on your emails and website.
  3. Cyber Essentials Plus is tougher to achieve for example, you could fail for having an outdated version of Google Chrome on one machine. An onsite penetration test and inspection of the network will be required as part of the assessment. Impressive planning and exceptional IT management is imperative to maintain standards.
